The evening will showcase poetry and visual art from local Illinois adoptees in Roots Unbound, alongside dance by Gabriel Gutierrez: a Chicago native, adult adoptee, reconnecting P’urhépecha Native, and founder of MOFundamentals, the only foster- and adoptee-led dance program in the United States.

Poetry and movement are woven into the performance itself, as storytelling and art come together to affirm lived experience, build connection, and imagine more healing futures.

Featuring Dr. Gina Samuels — University of Chicago Professor, Director of the Roots Unbound/Black Adoption Project, Faculty Director of the Center for the Study of Race, Politics & Culture — alongside performer and artist Gabriel Gutierrez.

Migraciones: The Journey of 200 Stories

Juneteenth Gathering

Since February, stories have been shared across Illinois — held, witnessed, and honored by UpRising Doulas and Rooted Story Workers. Now, these narratives begin their wider journey.

Without knowing it, almost every story had a crossing. In those crossings heard liberation, freedom, security, and peace.We also heard struggle, loss and disappointment.

As we celebrate the closing of our story collection and move into public display — through the Mobile Museum and Digital Archive — we choose this time to remember the journeys and untold stories of so many freedom seekers.

We honor those who traveled the Underground Railroad to Mexico, seeking the freedom that had already been declared there in 1829 by President Vicente Guerrero. We also remember the longstanding celebrations in Mexico on Día de la Emancipación, where Mexican communities — especially the Mascogos (descendants of Black Seminoles) in El Nacimiento de los Negros — have faithfully held onto the stories of Black liberation for over 150 years, even as those histories were obscured in the United States.

These are not separate stories.

They are all movements —migrations from confinement toward possibility and from silence toward voice. This is what emancipation looks like in real time.

A Living Understanding of Freedom

Juneteenth marks a historical moment of liberation. Día de la Emancipación in Mexico marks another.

The 200 stories gathered here remind us:

emancipation is not only something that happened —it is something people are still moving through.

Join us as we weave these threads together — Raíces Entrelazadas — in the Journey of 200 Stories.

Every story is a crossing.

We trained 20 storyworkers. Facilitated over 40 groups. Collected over 200 artifacts. And connected countless hearts and minds together one story at a time.

Now it's time to share our work. Come learn how we used testimonio, genogram, active listening, and artifact in migration theory in a method called ROWM- return to the origin and witness movement.

On Saturday May 9th, we will celebrate the stories and the technique. We will also christen our mobile museum as it begins a journey throughout the state of Illinois to various museums, churches, libraries and community organizations.

Hear from our storyworkers. Participate in a mini "taste of storygroup", make your own artifact, all next to a tea and dessert buffet.

It's drop in style, so don't worry if you can't stay the whole time.

A collaboration between PHIMC and Youth Services of Glenview/Northbrook, this year’s Action Camp will take place from Monday, August 3 to Friday, August 7, with counselors arriving on Sunday, August 2.

Cristina Castillo, Program Coordinator at the SIU School of Medicine Center for Rural Health and Social Service Development, will be the guest speaker for the evening. As an Educational Psychologist, she strives to teach both the mind and the heart. Following her presentation, attendees will engage in meaningful dialogue that reflects on the contributions and resilience of Hispanic and Latin American communities throughout U.S. history.

The Carbondale “At the Table” Dinner & Dialogue Series will occur on the first Tuesday of the month through June. The Carbondale “At the Table” Dinner & Dialogue Series brings an intersection of topics ranging from culture, history, and racial healing to the table through facilitated conversations so that community members from diverse backgrounds can engage in dialogue while enjoying a community meal.
