Our partners at Capstone Clique captured memories of elders and community members from the West Side of Chicago.

The event will debut the Westside Love Map, a short film with West Side memories of elders and community members, followed by a panel discussion featuring Capstone Clique, CHM, CDOT, and CMAP.

This event is free to Illinois residents.

Embracing the theme “Swing Big, Dream Bigger,” Carbondale Game Changers will educate local youth and community members on the history of America’s national pastime and the lasting impact of the Negro Leagues on sports and culture in the United States. The event will encourage attendees to dream boldly about how they, too, can become future “game changers” and make a positive difference in their community.

Youth from local organizations, including the Boys & Girls Club of Southern Illinois and I Can Read, will join Mayor Harvey and the City of Carbondale at MTN Dew Park to watch the Thrillville Thrillbillies while learning about how the Negro Leagues became a symbol of perseverance and community pride throughout American history.

In my story share, I highlighted the sense of failure I felt when I was removed from the safety net of my all Black town to a University and University town that was not prepared for a Black girl with ADHD in the 1980s. If I were to paint a picture it would look like this. Me liberating myself from internalized ableism plus racism and recognizing that I did it, even if it was decades later.
